10 Rules for Writing an Essay in Economics

1. Always start with a plan of what you  will include in the essay, which diagrams you will draw, what examples      you will include and how you will evaluate.
2. Look at the trigger words in the question. What is the question requiring of you?
3. Look at the mark allocation and ensure the length of your response is in line with      this.
4. Start the essay with definitions of the economic  terminology. Never begin or end with a graph!!
5. When you include a diagram pay special attention to the labels. Quantity of what?   Price  expressed in….?   Demand or Aggregate Demand?
6. Never  include a diagram unless it is relevant and well explained in detail.      Remember they should be big and clear
7. Always evaluate.  If it is not clear how, consider the  different stakeholders, long run versus short run and the most salient point in an argument
8. Stay on the point.  Do not answer the question  you WISH you had been asked.
9. Always refer to the data set (paper 2) Give real-life examples (paper 1)
10. Sum up the crux of the argument in your last few sentences.
